Visa and Border Measures
Most travellers from Australia can enter Japan visa-free for short-term stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business. A visa is required for longer stays or specific purposes such as work or study. Ensure your passport has at least six months’ validity on arrival, and you may be asked to show proof of onward or return travel.

Other Formalities
On arrival, you may need to complete an immigration card and a customs declaration (paper or electronic). Japan has strict regulations regarding certain items, including medications, fresh food, and alcohol/tobacco limits. Some medications legal in Australia may be restricted or prohibited in Japan—check in advance and obtain a Yakkan Shoumei certificate if required.

Passport
Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay. Although Japan does not officially require six months’ validity, it is strongly recommended to avoid issues with airlines and border checks. Carry a photocopy of your passport or a digital copy in case of loss or theft, and remember Japanese law requires foreigners to carry their passport at all times.

Money
The local currency is the Japanese Yen (JPY). Japan is still a cash-oriented society, especially outside major cities. ATMs that accept foreign cards are available at post offices, 7-Eleven stores, and major banks. Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, larger restaurants, and shops, but less so in rural areas or small businesses. Currency exchange is available at airports, banks, and licensed money changers.

Local Travel
Japan has one of the world’s most efficient transport systems. The extensive train network, including the Shinkansen (bullet train), connects most cities and regions. In cities, metro and bus systems are convenient and reliable. Taxis are available but can be expensive. Consider purchasing a Japan Rail Pass if travelling long distances. Always use official taxis and licensed services.
